  3. Another Question

Q: Okay, I just found where you talk in some detail about your recording process, and I see that Jim Farber evidently misunderstood a lot of what you told him.

Anyhow, I am still AMAZED at the vocal sound through an iPhone mic.  Are you sure you’re not spinning the facts just an eensy, teensy bit?  :)

A: No spin, sir! Every instrument and vocal was recorded, one by one, using my iPhone’s mic and nothing else. And yes, they are complete takes as well. I have witnesses! :)

  7. Another Question

QUESTION: How did you record you vocals with the iphone? Did you use another mic to hook up to the iphone and did you mix it down through another program? It really sounds good I got the album today after first listening to the first song Home Sick. THanks

ANSWER: Explained in detail below, but short answer is no, I used no outside mics. Everything (instruments and vocals) were recorded directly into the phone’s mic.

Thank you for listening to the album!

  8. Recording Gear Question

QUESTION: I was just wondering what gear you used to record the various instruments into your iPhone?? Did you mic the drums with multiple mics, run em into a mixer, and then a RCA out into your 1/8 inch jack on your phone? I’d love to know how you routed everything like that. And were the recordings dumped into protools and mixed after being recorded on your phone?

ANSWER: I recorded the entire album, track by track, using only the built in microphone of the phone. The app 4Tracks was used as the recording interface. No outside mics, compressors, pre-amps or any additional gear was used. For drums, initially I was recording all the drums into the mic all at once onto one track except the kick drum (for the first song recorded, which was “That’s Your Boyfriend”). Eventually I realized that in order to get proper separation of sound I would have to record drum by drum individually. Songs such as “Homesick” and “Up In Flames” were recorded one drum at a time. After recording, I put the tracks in Garage Band and did minor EQ work and compression, then my good friend Ducky Carlisle finished the job in Pro Tools. We were very careful not to do too much in the way of mixing that would compromise the initial vibe of the raw recordings.

    Thanks for the question!
